Players Awards
Ceremony held at AFC Bournemouth on 9th June 2007
Player's Player Of The Year:
Tim Biglowe
Most Improved Player Of The Year: Sam Mee
Manager's Player Of The Year:
Bobby Dykes Match Reports
Sunday 17th December 2006 Merley Allendale 3 Cannon Colts 2
Merley U15s knew before kick-off against Cannon Colts they were
up against it, with skipper Joel Brennan, and arguably defender of the
season Ben Timberlake, out of action. It also didn’t help with Rory and
Nathan Hegan in France, because this season these two have gone together
like Spaghetti and Bolognaise. On the brighter side, Matthew Mears was
back from the horrific broken arm he got against Burton Albion. Manager
Derek Gillingham had no choice but to move Matthew Mears and Bobby Dykes
into defence, and with only 10 men, in-form striker Sam Mee had to be on
his own.
Merley began really well, with Alex Evans finding
Sam Mee, who in turn passed to Daniel Flynn, who made no mistake
nestling the ball into the helpless Cannon Colts keeper’s net. The 10
men were all over Cannon Colts with Sam Mee coming really close, this
resulted in one of Alex Evan’s many corners.
A few minutes later the tide changed and Cannon Colts
were on the break. A lack of communication between the back four gifted
Cannon Colts with the equaliser. Merley’s heads dropped and they
couldn't create anything for the next 20 minutes. This resulted in
disaster. A real scramble in the Merley area and the ball ended up in
James Newbon's net just on the half time whistle. 2-1 down but still all
to play for.
Merley were a reformed side in the second period with
Bobby Dykes coming into a defensive midfield role. Dan Flynn was playing
really well, giving it his all by scurrying through players with his
tremendous agility. By doing this he carved out a chance, he laid it
back to Tim Biglowe who put in a delicious ball with plenty of hang
time, to be met by Aaron Lawrence who bravely stuck out a vital foot
which cleverly chipped the keeper. This left both player and parents
ecstatic.
If Merley wanted to take all three points they had to get
stuck in and wear their hearts on their sleeves, and in
traditional Merley fashion this is exactly what happened. Matty Sowinski-Brown
was cutting out every challenge from Cannon Colts speedy right winger,
he also showed his own extraordinary pace. Bryan Gillingham produced
several of his accurate David Beckham style long balls, but time was
running out. A joint tactical decision from Derek and Chris was to put
Bobby up front and make Sam Mee help with the defensive duties.
This totally changed the aspect of the game, with Bobby
showing a powerful presence in their area. The sands of time for Merley
were running low, but they applied more and more pressure. With just 30
seconds left on the watch, Bobby released Tim Biglowe who, clearly
on-side, steadied his nerve and from 9 yards out calmly put the ball
past the keeper. Tim wheeled away to the touchline, and whipped of his
shirt in celebration (and to show off his muscular body). The ref was
somewhat less than amused! This proved to be almost the last kick of the
match, and another stunning Merley victory was assured! More Pictures
